Wise-cracking, corporate Collector Malcolm Graves has spent twenty years chasing bounties and extinguishing rebellions throughout the solar system for Pervenio Corp.
Now, he’s got a new mission. A routine pickup job. Easy credits. Malcolm is hired to track a young offworlder who ran away from his wealthy family to experience the real world.
But when a mad scientist gets his hands on the target first, Malcolm finds himself caught up in a twisted plot to develop working androids.

But it is perhaps the most emotionally effective gut punch of all of Bruno’s works. Bruno doesn’t shy from the seedier side of human nature.
Life hasn’t gotten all that great for humankind in the future. Jobs can be tough. Man evolved beyond Earth and made life inhospitable everywhere they landed in the universe. Survival is a struggle. Malcolm is a collector, which means he’s basically a private bounty hunter for the largest corporation ever. His company runs nearly everything. He has a gun and he knows how to use it. Malcolm also has a daughter, Aria. She’s precious to him. And he raises her despite her existence not being allowed.
She’s a tough kid as a result. Malcolm’s latest job requires that he track down a lost soul, a rich kid gone bad. The young man doesn’t want to be rescued but gets himself into a bad scrape and apparently sold into some sort of racket, a human slavery network. Or that’s what it appears. Turns out it’s worse. Way worse. Malcolm is the perfect gunslinger.
He’s flawed. But he has a reasonable outlook on life. Some things rub him the wrong way, and he has convictions. When he stumbles across a mad scientist, it appears he’s met his match.
And that’s OK. Malcolm has seen it coming. But he’s got a daughter, and that makes him almost superhuman despite impossible odds. Bruno’s been compared to Phillip K.
I don’t know if that’s appropriate. I mean, the author of some of the weirder stories in science fiction is in a class all his own. But Bruno’s forging his own identity with every word he publishes. I read “The Collector” in one sitting. Story is a 5 star winner! Rhett Bruno has quickly how did this happen so fast? Rather than a Star Wars-ee like swashbuckling adventure tale in space, with Rhett the writing is SO good that you always feel like you just joined into a very intimate conversation with the real people – not characters in his stories.
Malcolm Graves is caught in the act of being himself in this story, billed a novella or long short story. It was such a satisfying read. A simple collection gets very complicated in this story as Jimmy, a runaway from a wealthy family goes on the lamb and may end up in pieces?
Does he? Malcolm is a Collector for Pervenio Corp, and you are going to have to read the story and the books to find out more about this. Part detective, part hit man, all around grizzled and gritty very experienced middle-aged guy who is a veteran and a pro at what he does.
The villain is a very complex and very realistic character too. The hot babes are simulated humans – or are they? Space travel is depicted very realistically. Even food is. And what is Malcolm doing taking his young daughter along for the ride? This was downright shocking to discover!
When I pick up a sci-fi book, it is for escape into another world. It is for entertainment. It is for getting so absorbed in the story that it comes to life. When you have problems with characters, or something is less than realistic, or problems with language, bad editing, and grammar, it is a lot for me like seeing the stage set and the set hands running around in a play.
