I think what bill is trying to get at here, is that you may be over your head. Why are you using VMWare anyways? It seems like you didn’t do a lot of research about how it works, and what the system requirements are. And then blindly provisioned the guest OS with no regard to what the impact of the host OS would be. What is your end goal here? Is this learning or is it production? Please tell us what your trying to do so we can better advise you.

You are maxing out your available resources using the type-2 hypervisor and OS. The page file size has nothing to do with the issue. A good solution would be to at a minimum add more memory to the system, or better yet, do your virtualization on desktop or server class system. Make sure you only assign 1 core to a guest it may bring down your CPU usage. It is normal for the computer to slow down especially if you only have 4 GB of RAM this is bound to create swap and use your hard disk for memory.

You are running a VM on a relatively under-powered laptop for this purpose. You are going to see these kinds of wild fluctuations, this is normal behavior.

My only thought would be to try the following set your page file to the exact same size as your memory. As Bill stated you probably want to look at upgrading the memory, or use another machine for your VMS. I think you are missing the point. Yes, this is going to cause higher disk utilization.

Setting your page file to that large of a size is also contributing to this. I agree, but what are the resources you have provisioned to the VM?

Have you reserved any for the System OS? Thought I should clarify that the only reason to look at doing anything with the page file is that windows 8 and 8. The common fix for the Windows issue is setting the memory page file to the same as the physical memory. One thing that nobody has mentioned is how much free space you have on your hdd, I agree that your system is underpowered for the task, but depending on what your vm is doing and other running processes you could get away with a VM.
