I looked in the manual and there was supposed to be a way to force chapters so that you don’t have to load the whole thing. I tried it. The screens didn’t match the manual. I called Pinnacle again, only to learn that I had had my one and only free call.
I had two choices, I could pay for some annual service contract with which I would then be permitted to ask why their software doesn’t match their manual or I could go fish.
Now, I am a fairly persistent guy. I called all their customer support numbers, pre and after sales numbers. Pinnacle is actually owned by AVID software. I called AVID technical support and sales. I called AVID’s corporate offices. I found the name of the technical support sevice manager and used AVID’s dial by name function to call him.
All to no avail. I am unable to talk to anyone. They do not have a chat function. I have emailed them at least a half dozen times. I have gotten a couple of computer generated ‘Gee, it seems like you’re having a problem, why don’t you describe it’ emails back, but nothing that suggests a human has been involved. I assume all of AVID’s products are like this. I have since removed Pinnacle from my computer and consider this a lesson learned, always investigate the companies customer support before buying.
What ever you do, don’t waste your money on Pinnacle Studio I only gave it one star because with 3 mail-in coupons, I got it free, except for the tax. The first difficulty is installing it and the endless registration process, not only for the software, but for support and addins.
Some other issues: 1 there are very few tracks available and no way to add any; 2 the preview window will show still images in 16×9 if that is what they are but videos at 4×3 even if they are 16×9; 3 there is no photo editing of still images or videos like there is in most other software packages; 4 the thumbnails are so small you cant see them unless you are on a large display; 5 there is no way to have transitions inserted automatically, each one has to be inserted by hand, and takes 3 clicks to do it; 6 there is no motion shown for the various titles, to see what the title will do, you have to click on it then move to the preview screen and click on the play button; 7 the file name of images are not shown in the time-line or storyboard unless you hover over each image separately.
I could go on and on. There seems to be a lot of production and post production capabilities if you can get that far, but overall, this is a horribly unfriendly program. Due to a lack of funds, I was unable to go with the more expensive and comprehensive software out there, but for my needs I figured Pinnacle would be sufficient. I was wrong.
The program usually gets the job done, but is so buggy that it really kills my productivity. I have a beast of a computer Sandy Bridge Core i7 overclocked with a screaming video card, and the software makes no use of the power that my machine possesses. I was hoping that an update would address that issue, but no. It’s crazy to me that a well-respected company like AVID would but their name on something that they don’t support. And to top it all off, they want twice the price for the Ultimate version which gets you a few more effects packs which should be included with the basic version.
