Content for the most part is a good starter point – and that’s all it is, Mental Ray gets like 10 pages and you can find half a dozen entire books here on Amazon just on rendering with Mental Ray – but the models in the book, and the associated pictures, are horrendous to the point of worthlessness, so dark and muddy you can’t even see the horrible models that must have taken a solid three and a half minutes to make, by someone who has no artistic eye whatsoever.
Even so, tons of content here and a handy thing to keep around for when you run into something you haven’t used before, you’ll get at least a reasonably good basic explanation here. For things like poly and mesh modeling and rendering in general though, know that you’ll need to move from here to dedicated texts to learn what you will need to know.
One person found this helpful. As a MAX user all the way back to version R2, I have bought my share of guides and make my judgement against that experience.
I bought this one to just get up to speed with the changes in the version. What a disappointment. For the most part, Murdock tells you what you can do, but not much in terms of how to do it. This is, after all, a two-part exercise. I had to resort to the online Help to clear up questions not addressed by this guide more than a couple of times early on, which really begs the question of the utility of a third-party guide.
Worse still is the fact that the Index does not correlate with the text. It appears that perhaps the text was updated but the index was not. Condition: Good.
