If you’re fading an audio clip in or out or from one audio clip to another you could just put a dissolve on the audio track. If you want to change the audio level within a clip, you can use keyframes or you can add an edit, adjust the audio level on either side of the edit using the Audio Mix tool, and add a dissolve I know editors who prefer one method over the other, so it’s down to personal preference. Besides keyframes, you can also use the basic dissolve effect dedicated key is immediately above the QWERTY enter key.
You can use the Quick Transition button for that. By default it will give you a dissolve on all selected tracks on the nearest transition. Since I don’t use the standard keyboard layout, I have no idea where it is mapped to by default, but my guess is that it is mapped somewhere by default.
