It starts with the basics, so even if you have no experience in graphics you can get up to speed quickly. The rest of the book is how artists apply the tools to their uses and demonstrates the power of the software by taking you through projects.
Once I have completed the lessons in this book, I will probably keep this out as a coffee table book because it was clearly designed by graphics artists and therefore looks great. This is a gorgeous book. Well designed in every way. A pleasure to look at and read. For every exercise, you need to type in a long URL to directly download the resource file in a zipped format.
Then you have to open each zip and extract it before you can use it. And the zipped files take too long to download on top. I’m disappointed that the designers of this workbook did not pay enough attention to the resource file utilization. I highly recommend the way Lynda-dot-com solved this issue. For each Affinity lesson, you first download all the resource files in one zip folder. After you extract it, you just double click the file and it opens up for you to follow the lesson without any hassles.
End of the story. No wonder a Google search will reveal many user questions asking where the Affinity resource files are.
They are not easy to find unless you type in a long URL for each and every resource file. I’m returning the workbook reluctantly since it’s such a good looking volume — that has little user value when it comes to following the instructions for individual tasks and projects.
To be honest, I bought the book because it looks pretty and I wanted to get more information for the program. However, the information was simple and basic. Since the book workfiles arn’t easily acessible and the company’s online tutorials do a good job in teaching users the same information presented on the book.
Excellent workbook to learn Affinity Designer, with the best illustrators inside to work with you in developing your learning of the software! I needed this book, it has helped me tremendously!
Since there are limited tutorials on Affinity Designer, this books shows you how to do graphic design, 3D artwork, painting with vector and pixel, and making icons, also it shows you how to make your own brushes!
Needed something to help me get started with vector drawing. This book has been very good for that. Also serves as a general manual. Still, the Affinity people need to come out with decent manuals! See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This is a good workbook, although I bought it thinking it was a reference guide. It takes you through the various steps of designing a logo with all of the techniques that go along with it explained thoroughly and clearly, so that you learn as you practice in their examples, as opposed to being able to jump from section to section when you need to work out what a button does or how to do something specific as a reference title would.
It’s still an incredibly handy guide to Affinity, though the cost is the same as for the excellent software itself. I feel that the book should be half the price it is, although it’s a nicely made, well thought out and fairly heavy book. The Serif company who produce Affinity software really should have called this book ‘Designer and illustrator work book’ because pages is devoted to creating illustrations which I wouldn’t call design. The page breakdown is this: 14 to 73 Interface tour; 74 to core skills; to illustration projects; to Design projects; to Index, this followed by four tear-out pages printed on card with keyboard shortcuts for Mac or PC.
I use Affinity Publisher so only about two thirds of the book is useful for me, especially the tour detailing what each part of the interface does. The book is designed in the usual contemporary way with extensive white space and leaded out text. I find it odd that the book is not much less than the cost of the Affinity software it describes.

The book is presented very clearly and the steps to achieve the projects in the book are extremely clear. I bought the software and was immediately overwhelmed with it’s capabilities.
This book helped me to achieve the results I wanted and stopped Affinity Designer from becoming the latest graphics package I discarded because I was incapable of driving it. The book is pretty good. I have been a professional artist for the last 15 years but paint and draw non digitally. I had been messing with affinity Designer but needed some better direction and this definitely supplied this.
My only suggestion would be dont just jump in. READ the book from the start and follow what it says. This is not a book you can “scan over” and expect to learn.
In all a great book that is made even better if you use it in conjunction with affinitys web tutorials. I was completely new to Affinity Designer and decided to take a chance on this book. It has not dissapointed and has helped my knowledge of the software no end. Pros: – It is a very well put together and presented book. Cons: – not sure how useful it would be for experienced users.
