I have inserted a picture that shows what happens when I open an existing document with pictures in it. The second picture demonstrates what happens when I insert a picture into a new document. The fref does not show up and it inserts a bunch of artifacts.

Did you try repairing your Office? If you only tried ‘Quick Repair’ and it did not microsovt try ‘Online Repair’. I think micorsoft is Windows 10 that is at fault, since all the issues started after that upgrade.
