Under Format, select an output format. Click the Settings button to set options. To convert movie filesNote On the Action menu, click Convert Movie Files. Note:If you choose the convert to DV Stream option, the file can be imported into Apple’s iMovie for additional editing.
Select Replace original files to delete the original and replace it with the converted image. Find and manage original filesIn Phase One Media Pro , you generally use metadata and image characteristics to sort and display files. However, there are also tools that you can use tomanage your files according to file characteristics such as file name and file path. You can use these tools to help you locate duplicate or missing files orto modify file paths.
Media Pro defines duplicate files as two or more items that reference the same file path. Missing files are catalog items whose stored file path doesn’tcorrespond to an image because you may have moved, renamed or deleted the original image.
In this case, the full-size image in Media view will nolonger be available, and either you will receive an error message in the header bar or the last available file path will be in red. Note:If you have imported two identical files that have different file paths, Media Pro does not recognize these as duplicate files, but as similar files.
Tolocate these types of files, use the Show Similar command in the Find menu. To locate missing itemsClick Search to browse to the missing items if you know where they are now located or if you know what they are now named. An alternate wayto do this is to use the Reset Paths feature, described below. Click Remove to delete them from the catalog. To reassign or modify a path1. On the Find menu, click Reset Paths. In the Reset Paths dialog box, reassign or modify the path for one or more items.
Browse to and select the folder or directory where the file s now reside. Media Pro displays each file in a window for you to confirm the new path for each file. If you have a group of files, and you are sure that all the new paths are correct, you can click the Accept All button to avoid having to confirma new path for each. If you have just moved or renamed a whole folder or disk, and you need to update the file path in the application, it is much faster to use theReset folder path command in the Catalog Folders pane of the Organize panel.
To find a catalog1. Select a storage volume from the menu. Phase One Media Pro will locate all catalogs on that volume. Do one of the following:To refresh the search, click the Find button. To preview the found catalog, click a catalog name in the search results list.

Handling hierarchical items in the Catalog FoldersIn the Catalog Folders section in the Organize panel, you may have several hierarchies of folders that contain your media files. A key option called Union of Folder Hierarchies, located in the Configure Folder Watchingmenu in the Catalog Folders section, enables you to view the total number of media items located in a particular hierarchy.
If you do not select the Union of Folder Hierarchies option, the Catalog Folders section displays only the number of media files associated with each subfolder of any hierarchical folder group. Catalog Folders with Union of Folder Hierarchies not checkedHowever, if you select the Union of Folder Hierarchies option, the higher levels of any hierarchical metadata group in the Catalog Folders section display, in parentheses, the aggregate number of media items associatedwith any subfolders of the hierarchy.

You can filter files by that category. HTML Engine Directives control the size of images on index and media pages and alsodefine what values are displayed in a particular field in a dialog box. There are two steps in using the variable tag. In the first step, you declare the variable name and default value of the variable. If your site already has a style sheet that you want to use, make sure that you write acomplete URL to the existing CSS in your theme. Media Pro also includes Silverlight templates that enable you to quickly build dynamic web galleries that showcase your images in creative, dynamic layouts that take advantage of the cross-platform, rich-media Silverlight experience.
Youcan either use the templates as they are or customize them. When you have created the gallery, you can use your own FTP software to upload the files, or Media Pro can upload your exported web galleries. Important Note: Media Pro does not encrypt your FTP logon information; therefore, it doesn’t provide a secure method for logging on. If you are not sure which secure technology to use, ask your FTP site provider which ones they support.
An HTML index page contains thumbnail images. Clicking an image opens it at full size, with the metadata displayed. Alternatively, you can use any of the visual themes provided with the program. You can create your own themes. Media Pro uses a different template for the index and media views of your gallery, and offers a rich vocabulary that can be used to extract catalog information for example, fields and thumbnails ,and also high-level tags for navigation, date, time and so on.
Creating themes requires HTML editing skills. Create a galleryTo create a gallery1. Open a Media Pro catalog of photos, illustrations, movies, or any media file that can be distributed on the web. Media Pro exports only the visible items in the catalog. Make sure that the items that you want to export are displayed in the catalog before you create the gallery. On the Theme menu, choose a theme type. Click the Theme tab and set these options:Site Title Set the text that appears at the top of the index page in your gallery.
If you do not want to include a title, leave this field blank. Some themes do not require a site title. Theme Choose from a selection of preset themes, or use Default to create your website by using the View Options you set for the Thumbnail and Media views in your catalog. If you select Default, make sure tochoose the desired index table, thumbnail and media size options.
All other themes have pre-defined tables and media sizes that are designed for optimal output. You can change the options; however, some themes arewritten to work with specific defaults and changing those could produce strange results. If a produced HTML gallery looks incorrect, try remaking it with the default settings.
Index Table Customize how many thumbnails, across and down, appear on the Index page in your gallery. Thumbnails Set options for size and position of thumbnails in your gallery. Media Set options for size and position of media in your gallery. Options include. Output Select the Use numbers for HTML file names setting to use a numeric increment for example, 1, 2, 3 for the media file name.
Watermark Export images with a visual watermark, which is a secondary image that is overlaid on the primary image. Select the Frame images setting to put a 1-pixel black border around each exported thumbnail and media image. Select the Preserve color profiles setting to embed the ICC color profiles into each exported thumbnail and media image.
Movies Adjust the properties of QuickTime movies on Media pages:Auto Play automatically plays a movie as soon as it has been loaded in a browser. Continuous makes the movie play in a loop. Display QuickTime Controller toggles on and off the standard playback controls for a movie. Kiosk mode hides the options to save movies and change QuickTime settings from within a browser window.
Media Pro stores each server that you define in a menu for quicker access in the future. User name Type your user name for your FTP server.
Password Type your password for your FTP server. Remote Directory Type the path of the web root folder of your account on the server. If a folder for your gallery does not already exist, make sure that you define the new folder in this path. Skip existing image files Select this box if you have already uploaded your gallery images and are just uploading the HTML again. Make sure that you have typed the same upload folder name that you designated in the Folder field.
Click the Theme Fields tab. Some themes have variables that you can type in this panel. For example, you might have a generic theme for your professional assignments. This theme might have special theme fields for you totype the client’s name, job number and assignment details. This information will then appear on the exported web pages. When you have completed creating a gallery, there are two final options to review.
For Media Pro to upload an exported gallery, you must select the Upload to server box. Select the option Launch browser when done to have Media Pro open the exported web gallery in the system’s default web browser.
After defining your settings, click Create. The time that it takes for Media Pro to create a gallery can vary depending on the number of images, their original size and the export size. The gallery will open in your web browserafter export, if that option is selected. Once Media Pro has exported your gallery, you will see a dialog box that says “Gallery build is completed. Do you wish to upload X files to the server?
If you click OK,the progress bar panel will display the progress of each file as it is being uploaded to your server. The features of the Image Editor apply only to image file formats such as. You can start the Image Editor by clicking the toolbaricon or, on the Window menu, by clicking Image Editor. To correctly preview the filter effects of the Image Editor, Media Pro automatically switches to Media view when a filter is selected.
To edit images1. Choose a filter from the Image Editor panel by clicking the filter name in this list. Make your edits in the Filter dialog box, and then click OK. Apply as many filters to the image as you want. To discard all changes and reload the original image, click the Revert button. To remove the effect of the last filter applied, clickthe Undo button. Image modifications performed by any of the tools described in this section are not saved until you click the Save button in the Image Editor panel.
Some effects display realtimeresults of the filter in Media view so that you can see how the effect appears on a larger view of the image before you accept the changes.
This feature is named Preview,and you can use it by selecting the Preview option when it is available. You can also move the area being shown in the Preview window by dragging the image. To overwrite the existing file, click Save. When you click the Save button, a dialog box appears that lets you define compression and file-type settings. This dialog box also givesyou the option of storing a backup copy of the original file in a folder of your choice, or in the Version Control folder.
Saving image files removes embedded digital photo annotations EXIF that might have existed in the original file, unless you selected the option Preserve EXIF metadata in the Save dialogbox. After you save image files, you must synchronize their annotations by clicking the Action menu, and then clicking the Sync Annotationscommand. If you do not synchronize them, then the saved file will not contain the annotations in the original file. Import from a catalog file and merge catalogsPhase One Media Pro can combine the contents of one catalog with the contents of another.
You can do this either by using a menu command or by using a drag-and-drop operation. If anitem’s thumbnail in an older catalog is smaller than the thumbnail in the catalog that you are appending, then you have to rebuild the thumbnail to match the new size. To merge catalogs1. Open an existing catalog. Browse to and select a catalog created by a Media Pro product.
Note:This feature does not work with catalogs created by other programs. New media items are appended to the end of the existing catalog. Also added are each item’s related annotations, label and thumbnail. Catalog Sets are merged into the opencatalog. Note:If the open catalog already contains files that are in the list of files to be merged, Media Pro retains the file in the open catalog and doesn’t copy the file from the list to bemerged. To merge catalogs by dragging1.
Open at least two catalogs. Select one or more items in one catalog and then drag them to the other catalog. If you are in List view or Thumbnail view, Media Pro puts the dragged files where your pointeris. If you are in Media view, Media Pro appends the dragged files to the end of the current catalog.
Using this method does not remove a file from one catalog and add it to another. This method only copies the item and its related information. If you want to move the file fromone catalog to another, hold down the key while dragging. Note:If the open catalog already contains files that are part of the selection of files that you are dragging, Media Pro ignores these files and won’t copy them.
To match thumbnail sizes in appended catalogs1. After merging the catalogs, select the appended files. On the Action menu, click Rebuild Item. Open an existing catalog or create a new one. On the Source menu, select the disk from which you want to import media. Click the Destination folder icon. In the dialog box, select or create a folder for files that are downloaded from the disk. Optional To import only image file formats, click the Media Importers button and select only the Images box.
This prevents other kinds offiles from being imported into the catalog. Imports can be filtered by any combination of eight different media file type groups. Set the options according to the following descriptions:Place in This option lets you determine where to put downloaded files.
Selecting the Download folder puts downloaded files intothe Destination folder. Selecting Today’s folder puts downloaded files in the destination folder, in a folder that is named withtoday’s date. Selecting Original folder hierarchy puts downloaded files in the destination folder as copies of the folder directoryhierarchy on the web server. Rename This field lets you rename all downloaded files that have sequential numbers according to a text string that you specify such as the date or subject.
To maintain the existing file names, leave this field blank. Actions This category lets you specify actions to take with downloaded files. Selecting Skip files with same name prevents youfrom writing over existing files that have the same name. Selecting Lock downloaded files selects the desktop lock status for alldownloaded files.
Selecting Delete originals after downloading moves original files to the Trash after they have been downloadedto the destination folder. Note:The Delete originals after downloading option only works on rewritable storage media. Annotate This category lets you choose a metadata template to apply a group of pre-defined annotations to all downloaded files.
If no templates are available, you can create one by selecting New Metadata Template. Clicking the text buttonmenu displays the template content and some additional options for applying metadata.
Download This field lets you download all files from the disk and store them in the destination you specify. Import from a digital cameraYou can import images from digital cameras in two ways, depending on the USB transfer settings of your camera. Refer to your digital camera’s documentation to determine if it supports PTP and how to correctly define PTP settings for the camera.
To import images using Picture Transfer Pro tocol1. Plug your camera into your computer. When the dialog box for your camera appears, click Cancel. Launch Media Pro and open an existing catalog, or create a new one. On the Source menu, select the camera or media card from which you want to import media.
In the dialog box, select or create a folder to put files that are downloaded from your camera. Select an option according to the following descriptions:Place in The option Download folder puts downloaded files in the destination folder.
Today’s folder puts downloaded files in the destination folder, in a folder thatis named with today’s date. Original folder hierarchy puts downloaded files in a copy of the folder directory hierarchy on the camera. Rename If you type a text string such as the date or subject in this field, Media Pro renames all downloaded files with sequential numbers following this string. Leave this field blank to keep the existing file names. Actions Select the option Skip files with same name to prevent Media Pro from writing over existing files that have the same name.
Set file creation date to capturedate sets the image file’s creation date to match the date when you took the picture Capture Date. This option is useful because some programs and some operatingsystem versions cannot read the capture date. This option helps you better organize your media on your desktop. Delete originals after downloading deletes originalfiles from your camera’s media card after they have been downloaded to the destination folder.
Annotate Choose a metadata template from this menu to apply a group of predefined annotations to all downloaded files. If there are no templates available, you cancreate one by selecting New Metadata Template. Clicking the button next to the menu displays the template content and some additional options for applyingmetadata. Click the Download button. Media Pro imports each image into the open catalog after it has been downloaded from the camera to the destination folder you selected.
After theimport is complete, remove the camera from the desktop and then you can safely unplug your camera. To import without a Picture Transfer Pro tocol1. Plug your camera into your computer, or insert your digital media card CompactFlash card, Memory Stick into your card reader.
Follow the directions of the Camera Wizard to locate an existing folder or to create a new folder for your pictures. On the last screen of the wizard, select Nothing. I’m finishedworking with these pictures. Start Media Pro and open an existing catalog, or create a new catalog. You can then import the new images into your catalog. Browse to and select the folder on your desktop where the Camera Wizard put your images.
Click Import. Import from the InternetYou can import any Internet image into your catalog by using one of two methods. You can import by entering a URL, or you can use the drag-and-dropoperation. To import by entering a URL, you must know the exact folder where that image resides in the site’s file structure. If there is a site that containsimages that you want to download, just entering the URL of that site does not download those images.
To import a file from the Internet1. In the Browse for folder dialog box, select or create a folder for files that are downloaded from theInternet. If you used the drag-and-drop operation, go to step 5. Type a web address in the text field at the top of the Download from URL dialog box.
If applicable, type a cURL command. Set the options according to the following instructions:Place in This field lets you choose where to put downloaded files. Selecting the Download folder puts downloaded files in thedestination folder. Selecting Today’s folder puts downloaded files in the destination folder, in a folder that is named with today’sdate.
Selecting Original folder hierarchy puts downloaded files in the destination folder as copies of the folder directory hierarchyon the web server.

In addition to downloading the web image, Media Pro downloads all files from the Internet, and stores them inthe destination you defined. Import items by draggingYou can drag any file, folder, hard disk, CD, file shortcut or other element representing storage media onto an open Media Pro catalog.
You can also dragfiles onto the Phase One Media Pro icon or shortcut icon. And you can use the drag-and-drop operation on a folder that contains some files that havealready been cataloged and also some new files.
Media Pro ignores the files already in the catalog and adds only the new files to the catalog. By default, the new Media Pro catalog contains references to the photographs that are still inside the iPhotolibrary folders, but you can move those files from the iPhoto folders and into a new folder. The new Media Pro catalog also contains your iPhoto albums as Media Pro catalog sets for moreinformation about catalog sets, see Catalog sets.
In addition, your catalog includes any metadata such as EXIF digital camera data, comments, or keywords that were assigned to your images iniPhoto. The following table shows how iPhoto annotations map to Media Pro annotation fields. On the Help menu, click Welcome. Click Import iPhoto Library. Media Pro automatically finds the iPhoto library for the active operating system user. Click Continue. Media Pro will open iPhoto and import all original photographs into a new catalog.
Note:This feature only works with iPhoto versions 2. If you want to move the newly imported files out of the iPhoto library, select all the images in the new catalog, and then, on the Action menu, click Transfer to Folder. In the Transfer to Folder dialog box, select Move files, reset paths, delete originals.
This moves your original images to a folder of your choice, sets the paths to the new locationand deletes the images from the iPhoto library.
To free additional space on your hard disk, you can delete all the thumbnails created by iPhoto. To do this, delete the iPhoto Library folder from the Pictures folder. Make sure thatbefore you delete the iPhoto Library folder, you transfer all original images to a new location on your hard disk. Alternately, you could leave the original images where they are andhave media in both iPhoto and Media Pro.
Import items from files and foldersImporting from files or folders is the most direct way to import whole folders or drives into catalogs. To import from files or folders1.
Start Phase One Media Pro. In the Welcome Screen, select Import from a folder you choose and click Continue. If you want to limit the files that you import, refine the Import criteria. In the File name box, type a file name. Select Size or Last Used to select options that limit the import according to your chosen criteria.
Selecting the Flat folder searchoption means only the folder level selected will be imported, and not any subfolders. Click Choose. While Media Pro imports your media files, the application displays a progress indicator panel.
To stop an import,5. On the File menu, click Save, and name your catalog. If you don’t choose a name for your catalogs, Media Pro names them chronologically tomaintain correct order on the desktop. By default, they are stored in a single folder for cross-catalog searches. To import files from a WebDAV-enabled network folder1.
Mount the network drive that contains the folder that you want to import. For information on mounting network drives, consult yourcomputer Help guide. Follow the preceding procedure, “To import from files and folders. Import items from Pictures and Movies foldersPhase One Media Pro automatically finds the Pictures and Movies folders on your operating system and imports all media into a new catalog. To import items from the Pictures and Movies folders1.
On the Help menu, click Welcome Screen. Note: Media Pro ignores media in folders dedicated to a specific program, such as a third-party photo management program that you may be using to catalog your images. Import items from shortcut menusYou can add files to a Phase One Media Pro catalog by selecting an item stored anywhere on your computer. To import files by using shortcut menus1.
Locate the file you want to import on your desktop or anywhere on your hard disk. Click Media Pro Import on the shortcut menu. Files are added to the open catalog or, if no catalog is currently open, to a new catalog. When you search by using Spotlight, you’re accessing acomprehensive, regularly-updated index that sees all the metadata inside supported files on your hard disk, including the kind of content, the author, edithistory, format, size and much more. When a color is selected, you can inverse this selection bypressing the inverse selection Icon; this will also make yourselection inversed on the color chart. If you have a Macbeth color card, you can use the skin tones from this as well; you donot have to take the color from the skintones on the model. How do I adjust? The best way to lighten or darken an image is to use the exposure slider.
For more precise and advanced control, the exposure slider shouldbe used to centre the data within the histogram and define an initialexposure, ensuring that no highlight or shadow clipping occurs. When this stage has been completed, use the levels controls to finetune the lightness and darkness of the mid-tones of the image. How do I use the image adjustment sliders? Sliders provide the best way to adjust exposure and contrast. Use onetool at a time before moving onto the next tool.
ExposureAdjusts the exposure in much the same way as the controls on thecamera do. ContrastMoving the slider to the right increases contrast throughout the image. Moving to the left decreases. SaturationIncreases or decreases saturation of the image. When saturation isdecreased the image is Black and White. Then the histogram changesfrom RGB to monochrome though the image is still in a RGB color spacechosen as out output color space.
The curves tool has been designednot to clip image information and will only operate on tones within thedefined white and black points of the image. What are correct settings for Levels? In an ideal situation, levels should be adjusted to slightly clip the endpoints of the image histogram at the shadow end and to the maximumhighlight level on the right side of the histogram.
The images below show before and after adjusting the levels foran image. Tip:The fastest way to use levels is the autotool as a starting point — this will not clipinformation — if the result is not desired youcan fine tune the result manually.
You can see that the black point and white point adjustments havebeen brought in very slightly. This has the effect of lightening the lightertones and darkening the shadow tones in the image, at the same timeincreasing contrast slightly. The process has to be done very carefullyin order to preserve the feeling that the image evokes.
Once the highlight and shadow points of the image have been fixed,the density or mid-tone values of the image can be adjusted using thecentre or gamma slider on the levels tool. Custom Target LevelsCustom Target Levels extend the abilities of the levels tool, enabling themeans to control the output values and to reduce contrast in the image.
This is particularly useful where an image has data in the highlight areathat is in danger of clipping. The theory is that you set the target level tothe desired value and then use the picker tool to choose the area withinthe image that you wish to match that brightness level.
With conventional pixel based image tools, output levels are usedto compress the tonal range of the image to fit in a smaller space, forexample re-mapping highlight values of to Whilst this preventsclipping, it means that there is a sharp cut-off of image data, leading to anhard transition between data and no data when the image is re opened.
Capture One Target Levels work in such a way that the tones areremapped, yet avoiding hard transitions in highlight areas and resultingin pleasant, more natural looking images. How do I use custom target levels? Set a desired value for an area in the highlight area of the image whereit is important to retain detail; for instance The same process can be repeated for shadow values and the blackpoint picker.
Do not do this unless you really understand the implications. Levels are used to control the overall tonal distribution of an image. Curves provide the ability to remap the area within the shadow andhighlight limits set by the Levels tool areas to produce a desired image.
The S curve achieves the increase in contrast by pulling down theshadow values, normally on the quarter tones and increasing the valuesof the tones at the three-quarter tone mark as shown in the image. The brightness values at the quarter tones, before applying the curve,are around 65 with image tonal values from black 0 to white at The curve darkens these tones to around 50, whilst the three-quartertones at are raised to , lightening them in the final image.
The inverse S curve has the opposite effect of lightening the shadowsand darkening the highlight tones, causing a reduction in contrast. For advanced use, the Pick Curve point picker tool p can be used topick a specific tonal area within an image. This value is added to thecurve to allow adjustment of the values for that part of the image. The image below clearly shows how the value picked on the imagetranslates to the image curve.
There are two scenarios where the High Dynamic Range tool may proveto be essential. In certain situations, image contrast is such that clipping may occurat both ends of the histogram.
In such cases the HDR tool provides ameans of optimizing the image to deal with the extreme contrast andprevent the clipping of highlights and shadows.
High Dynamic range also provides the means to make use of imagesthat have been accidentally over or underexposed to an extent thatrender them unusable with conventional exposure tools.
How can I optimize the dynamic range of an image? The dynamic range of an image is optimized at the shooting stage byadjusting exposure to capture the maximum amount of data. This mayresult in an image that does not look optimal on the LCD display. Once the image has been opened in Capture One, it is optimized byusing the various tools within the software to adjust the data.
Applying a soft-proof profile for the output should beconfigured in order to edit for this output device. RGB levels will allow you to change the levels including target levelsper color. How can I neutralize the shadow area in my image file? Should your shadow area be showing a not-desired tone of color, youcan achieve a more natural look by using RGB curves, this will work onthe individual tone of color value Red, Green or Blue in all in shadow orhighlight.
How can I get more clean colors? Not unusually you will experience doing shot outdoor, that are showinga shade of color from the e. This color shade would in the image example make the grass lookbrown-ish — to avoid this, you could add green either by using advancedcolor tool tab, or by pushing the green mid-tones in the R-G-B levels,both will however possibly leave the model, here the players, in a lightnot comparable to the green grass.
A good way to adjust the shadows and highlights in your image is withthe curves tool. Use the Pick Curve Point tool u to click in the area of the image to beadjusted. A point will be put on the curve and this allows very preciseadjustment of the exact tonal area of the image that you prefer.
To finetune this, use the arrow keys on the keyboard. This practice is muchmore accurate as compared to relying on the sliders in levels to achievean overall result. How can I prevent highlight and shadow detail loss? Correct exposure in combination with the dynamic range tool, wherenecessary, prevents highlight and shadow detail loss. PROFeatureHow do styles work on my image? Styles is a combination of presets added at once to provideyour photo a certain look, this will save loads of working hoursin post process.
The changes will be seen as soon as you mouse-overthe style, but will only be applied as you click on the style. But by adding the style, you only have topolish the photo afterwards. If you apply more than one style it is important to keep in mind, thatthe latest applied style will override the previous applied style, if thevalues exceed the previous style. Remove a style byentering the style drop-down-menu, the top area of this will showa list of added styles and the possibility of removing these as youmouse-over these menu items the photo will be live updated to showthe changes.
When you have created a look to your photo that you want to keep,copy the adjustments, and decide which changes to keep in the style,it is recommendable to not e. Name your style a recognizable name and you will find the style in theStyles Drop-down menu, below the default styles.
How can I transfer and share styles? How can I modify a style? When you have applied a style, and still want to change to attain theeffect you want, polish the image until perfect — and copy the settings,save the style, save using a new name, to not over-write already madestyle.
How can I see if a style is applied to an image? Easier is checking the Styles drop-down menu, above the Default stylesyou will find the applied styles on the primary variant. The styles islisted with the last one applied on top of the rest, the bracket indicatesif the previously applied style is Adjusted or partially or fully overridden. Choose an image and make all the necessary adjustments to it.
Next to each setting, there is an orange check or tick. If you wish toapply all changes to other images, leave all the boxes checked. If youprefer to apply only a subset of the changes, deselect the options notrequired.
Go to the browser and select the group of images that you want toapply changes to. Click on the Apply button and paste the settingsinto the selected image.
First of all your of course have to have the approximately sameexposure values, then make changes to one and then use CopyAdjustments and Apply Adjustments to to paste the settings to theother image files as described above. If the images have different white balance or exposure — Will a settingscopy be absolute or relative? Any settings copied from other images are absolute. For instance if yourwhite balance is currently tungsten, K and you paste a daylightbalance from another image, the setting will be an absolute one; it willnot be halfway between tungsten and daylight.
Can I save the settings with the RAW files? All changes made to a RAW file are saved in a. COS settings file. This filecontains all the information regarding edits made to the RAW file.

Variants provide an easy way to try different settings or modify thework you have done on an image without risk.
Original image data isuntouched by any changes made. How can I create different expressions from one image? New Variant creates a duplicate of the image using default settings. The image is created as it came out of the camera or DNG file exceptrotation.
Clone Variant creates an exact duplicate of the image you are workingon; complete with any changes you have made. How do I delete Variants? The easiest way to delete a Variant is marking the variant in the Vieweror browser and press Delete or on PC press Backspace. You can alsoright-click and choose Delete from the menu. When a Variant is deleted, only the settings file for the Variant is deleted. The original image file is untouched.
What settings does a Variant inherit from the original image? Clone Variants inherit all settings from the original image, includingwhite balance, color, exposure and other changes that have been madein Capture One. With the exception of Lens Cast correction Digital Backs only andMetadata, any changes made to an original image can also be appliedto a variant. Lens Cast is a special case, as it is regarded as a correctionof the original image.
That correction is applied to the original andautomatically applied to any variant. When creating a variant, metadata information is not changed becausethe content and the creator of the image have not changed. A lens is a delicate device that needs to balance various needs. Some lenses render images with a look that distinguish them as abrand, some are optimized for studio, travel, cost, architecture, weight,bulk, speed and many other parameters. Nevertheless, lenses do share some physical limitations that lead tovarious artifacts that can be undesirable.
The lens correction tool addresses most issues that commonly arise. Why are the sliders not active? Lens correction is merely possible on RAW files. What lens profile should I use? A lens profile encapsulates the behavior of a lens and forms the basisfor the correction. Capture One ships with a set of profiles for mediumformat. When a specific profile for your lens is available, you will getbest result. If you do not have a profile for your lens, use a genericprofile as described in the next item.

Geometric distortion, often simply called distortion, turns straight linesinto bended curves. This is especially pronounced at wide-angle shotswith a fisheye being an extreme example. If your lens is already known by Capture One PRO, you can find thelist in the Lens Drop down menu in case of Phase One lenses, or in thepreset menu in case of other brands.
These setting will do standard corrections to the images, thesecorrections are developed by Phase One developers team. Distortion can be particularly unwelcome with architectural- andlandscape- photographers. Without a lens profile, select the appropriate generic lens and experimentto set the amount. What is chromatic aberration and can I avoid it? Chromatic aberration CA occurs because light of differentwavelengths takes different paths through the lens and maybe in focus at different locations.
As most light is a mix ofseveral wavelengths, the lens will focus the colors differentlyand create color fringes on edges of high contrast. PROFeatureSince CA results from colors that are shifted, a white or light color on adark background will have colors on either side. If you have selected an appropriate lens profile,simply enable the checkbox. If you use a generic lens, Capture One cananalyze the image to find the focus.
The result of the analysis can be copied to other images used with thesame lens. Note that chromatic aberration varies with focal length fora zoom lens and extreme apertures may need to be analyzed specially especially when wide open. The distance may also take a role inparticular for macro lenses. Brass, chrome and other metallic products often give rise to extremecontrast. What is purple fringing and can I avoid it? Purple Fringing PF is, like chromatic aberration, an artifact that occursbecause a lens interacts differently with light of different wavelengths.
Unlike chromatic aberration, purple fringing will not usually show fringesof different colors. PF is mostly visible on edges of very high contrast, such as metallicproducts or branches on a tree against a bright sky.
It is often seen onimages that also show chromatic aberration, and wide angle lenses aremore likely to show this artifact. To correct for purple fringing enable the checkbox.
How do I avoid dark corners light falloff? Light falloff arises because the image is exposed more at PROthe center of the image than the corners. There are several Featurereasons for this — the distance from the lens to the backplaneis longer at the edges than the center and less light can passthe lens at oblique angles.
This means corners are exposed less thanthe center and hence they are darker than the center, this effect is mostcommon when the lens is wide-angle and wide open aperture. Otherwise, use a generic profile and set theamount carefully. This overrides any lens profile and is especially suitablefor large-format photography, complex tilt and shift images andreproduction work e. Darkening ofthe corners is often adesired effect that tendsto emphasize the centerof the image.
However,the effect can be createdwith more controlusing the Vignette toolinstead. Used this way,you can get a consistentlook throughout a seriesof images, regardless ofaperture or crop Soft corners may occur for many reasons especially with wide-angleretro-focus designs.
Otherwise, you need to experiment to get a proper setting. How can I make improve the light conditions from my repro standimage? When photographing from repro stands, the lighting will usually be thesame the same for several shots; start by making an all white shot fromyour repro stand not opal plate , if you are working on a Phase Oneback just let Capture One do the transforming by creating a LCC profileincluding Light Fall off, this way Capture One will equalize the lightingperfectly.
After this, you should keep aperture and light conditionsunchanged. If you are working on DSLR, it is recommendable to do a similar testshot, use a generic profile, make sure to check the sharpness, and thenuse the light fall off to correct the light, if Light Falloff is not powerfulenough try using the Vignetting tool as well.
Can I control the shape of Vignetting? Capture One provides more options on vignetting, you canchoose circular or elliptic, both variations will now be adjustedto you crop, not the complete image file. Remember using thelocal copy function, to adjust many images. Yes, the new Vignetting tool is made to accept the vignetting added toyour image file in previous versions, in that case you will have the circularvignetting, you can always change this to one of the new options.
Can I choose any tone of color for my Vignetting? Vignetting is a controlled exposure that will either darken or brightenthe edges of the image. The corner will be brighter when you add EVvalue and darker when you reduce the EV value.
Vignetting is however affected by any color tone you may choose toadd your photo including the styles Sepia and Blue tone. Elliptical on crop Circular on crop Circular Lens cast is a commonly known lens issue, creating darker areastowards the edge of the lens, this occurs as the light are entering theindividual glass in your lens, the more glass and groups the higher riskof visible lens cast.
What is Lens Cast Calibration? Capture One is equipped with one of the most powerful core enginesin the market, by an analysis of the Lens Cast shot Capture One willdetermine the need of correction, keeping the correction smooth andnatural.
What Lens types are supported? More lenses will come in time, but it isvery easy conducting your own analysis. Lens Cast is a well-known issue especially on large format and onwide-angle lenses. Capture One is providing and easy 2-step lens castcorrection tool placed in the Lens Tool Tab.
First do a lens cast correction shot, using a calibration plate, import theimage to Capture One and choose analyze in the LCC drop-down menu. You will automatically be asked to name your new LCC profile, used arecognizable name, reference to the lens, focal length and aperture, asyou will need LCC filters for all Apertures and focal lengths if possible. Use cursor arrows to move or edit crop area Cropping of an image can be done freehand or with the constraintsof specific ratios such as popular photographic paper sizes.
A gridis provided to facilitate alignment and there is the option to displaylabels, with dimensions related to the selected output destination. In combination with the output tool, images can be cropped to specificsizes for output. The rotation function is geared towards straightening of images whereobject or horizons are not as vertical or horizontal as was intended. As the rotation is applied, the image is automatically cropped to themaximum usable dimensions.
To crop an image, select the crop button in the Composition tool panelor the cursor tool selector. Dependingon the preferences that have been set, there will be a semi-transparentmask hiding the area that is being cropped.
The dimensions will indicatethe size of the cropped image. To view the cropped image, select another cursor tool and the imagewill be shown in its final form. You can still see the original image withthe cropping mask in the thumbnails.
Re-selecting the crop tool at anytime will allow adjustment of the crop settings. The crop masking can be changed in preferences. How do I revert to the uncropped image? Name the crop in a meaningfulway and then type in the ratio. Select the Focus Point picker in the cursor tools or in the Focus Toolwindow and select the area you want to check. Thefocus window will now automatically update any new shot when youselect it — to show the sharpness of the same area on each shot.
If you are working on multiple image files the focus tool will refer to theprimary image file, Focus Tool is working the same way on variants theFocus Tool is reflecting the primary variant. The Capture One sharpening is a newly designed andenhanced unsharp mask. The purpose is to compensate for the effect ofinternal filters in all DSLRs that soften the image and to compensate for thesoftening effect that occurs when the images are printed.
By default, Capture One sharpening settings have been configuredto provide a good looking image on screen. Additionally, the softwarecomes with a number of presets that are accessed from the pull-downmenu. Any of these presets can be activated and set as a default forall images.
When an image is destined for post-production or retouching in othersoftware, it is recommend processing the image without sharpening applied. How do I sharpen an image? Capture One has a range of presets, formulated to provide good startingpoints for sharpening images for most purposes.
Typically, an image that is sharpened, for print or press, will look overlysharp on screen but produce a pleasing result when printed. Inkjet printers vary, from small desktop models, to ultra-wide, largeformat machines. Start with the supplied inkjet setting, check the result and if desired,adjust. If you modify the settings, then the new settings may be nameduniquely and saved as a preset.
What settings are needed for printing in a magazine or brochure? If your images are processed for later printing it varies how muchSharpening is needed, a good starting point would be:Amount: Radius: 0. How can I see the effects of the sharpening? The effects of sharpening and noise reduction are shown as they willappear in the final image, in the viewer. A rule of thumb for sharpening used to be that the image should lookover-sharp on screen to look correct in print. These ideas have beensuperseded.
The current thinking is that a 2 stage workflow is better. First sharpenthe fine detail in the image. Use the capture or raw pre-sharpening setting. Secondly, a more aggressive sharpening affect can be used. This should beapplied when the image has been sized according to printing dimensions. Can I turn off image sharpening? There is no sharpening applied behind the scenes.
Sharpeningis a skill that is learned over time. If you feel insecure on the right amounts of sharpening, try out oneof the many Sharpening presets, after selecting the preset, you canalways edit the parameters further This noise is caused bythe light sensitive chip, regardless of ISO.
Normally this noise is morevisible at high ISO values. Higher Noise levels at high ISO values are caused because the signalhas been amplified.
LuminanceRemoves the pattern-like noise often present in shadow areas. Bestpractice is to set Luminance to 25, even for low ISO images. It is very difficult to recommend specific settings asnoise varies from camera to camera, but the program defaults providea good starting point. The viewer provides a clear view of the effect offilters on image noise. How can I remove noise from images?
Noise should be removed from the images using a combination of theabove tools. Capture One automatically applies some noise reductionto images, based on the ISO and exposure data from the camera that iscontained in the image metadata. The default settings provide a goodstarting point for further adjustments. What kind of noise can I remove in Capture One? Capture One allows the removal of luminance and color noise fromimages using the color and luminance noise reduction sliders.
Tip:Both sharpening and noise reduction toolsallow the user to create presets, making itextremely easy to create regular settings for aspecific camera or type of image.
Contrast is one of the variables to be used when adjusting hazy images,but the new PRO tool Clarity has proven to be an extremely effectivetool. Clarity is adjusting contrast and slightly also sharpness on basis of pixelfrequency. How can I smoothen the surface on my portrait? When the Clarity slider is pulled to negative values, the surface of theimage will be slightly smoothened, as the Clarity will lower the contrastand sharpness slightly.
This tool is a great advantage for the many photographers that docomposite portraits, as this does a gentler job than most 3rd partyapplications. Start by providing a small portion of amount, just until you see an effect,then ad pattern until you see a change and then finish with more amount.
Smoothening a surface will always affect the feeling of a sharp image,but the Surface slider in the Noise Reduction Advanced tool willsmoothen the look of surfaces, and at the same time work more gentlyon the edges on the images, this will provide a sharper look. On the example you see the original image shows colornoise as well assome pixel noise, the color noise is removed by adding a little amountof color noise reduction, then add some Surface noise reduction, andnote that the edges are still perfectly sharp.
How can I avoid my image looking too polished? When using Smoothen or negative clarity, you may produce an imagefile showing a surface that are too polished, in this case it can be agood idea to add a bit of structure in the image which will create a morenatural look on the image file.
Adding fine grains should be used with caution, but used in the rightamount, in coherence with the Surface tool, you can do quite a largeincrease on high ISO photography. How can I remove long exposure artifacts and high ISOnoise?
When shooting Long exposure photography, you mightexperience the so-called hot-pixels a single pixel appearingwhite when it should have been dark. As thefilter will analyze single pixels compared to the surrounding area, andcorrect the errors, but at you will find that Long Exposure tool arevery powerful tool.
Just like many of the adjustments tools, you should always use this toolwith caution, lesser is better, and do check the complete result beforeprocessing. Dust is not uncommon when doing medium format photography, ofcourse a lot can be avoided, by using air, and keeping the protectionplate on the back as clean as possible, still the chip creating the imageis by far too sensitive to not see a tiny, tiny dust particle.
Dust particles will always appear to be unsharp, the Dust removal toolis created to find the unsharp edges, and remove the dust particleperfectly by analyzing the underlying colors. The dust removal tool is a part of the spot removal tool. After selecting dust removal tool in the Type drop-down menu you cannow mark up the dust spots on the image using the spot cursor tool.
